12-Night South Africa Christmas and New Year Itinerary 2026/27
Do the safari before Christmas, spend Christmas in the Winelands and finish with New Year in Cape Town. Arrive in Cape Town on 20 December 2026. On 21 December, fly direct to Skukuza for three nights in Greater Kruger, then fly back on 24 December. Spend three nights in Franschhoek over Christmas and five nights in one Cape Town hotel for New Year, departing on 1 January 2027. That is 12 nights with only three hotel changes, and none on the busiest days around New Year.

Who this itinerary suits
This route is for travellers who want three experiences in one festive trip: a private safari, Christmas on a wine estate and New Year in Cape Town. It suits couples, families with children old enough for game drives (check each lodge’s age policy) and first-time visitors.
It is not a road trip. It uses one return flight to the safari and keeps driving to the Cape Town-Franschhoek transfers. If you have fewer nights, read how many days you need in South Africa. If you want the coast instead, the Garden Route December guide explains the alternative.

Day by day
Day 1 - Sunday 20 December: arrive in Cape Town
- Use a pre-arranged airport transfer.
- Stay near the V&A Waterfront or in the City Bowl for an easy airport run the next morning.
- Keep the evening light. A long-haul arrival followed by an early flight is not the night for a long dinner.
Day 2 - Monday 21 December: fly to the safari
- Airlink’s Skukuza schedule lists 4Z651 departing Cape Town at 10:30 and arriving at Skukuza at 12:55.
- The lodge transfer from Skukuza usually connects in time for the afternoon game drive. Confirm the timing with the lodge.
- Pack light. Many lodges and small aircraft have soft-bag limits.
Days 2-5 - 21 to 24 December: three nights in Greater Kruger
- Expect two game drives a day: early morning and late afternoon into dusk.
- December is green, hot and wet. Skukuza averages 33.7 °C maxima and 96 mm of rain in December (1991-2020 normals).
- Many species give birth in early summer, and migrant birds are present. Thick vegetation can make sightings less predictable than in the dry season, so experienced guiding matters.
- Read the December Kruger guide and Sabi Sand safari costs.
Day 5 - Thursday 24 December: fly to Cape Town, then on to Franschhoek
- Airlink lists 4Z652 departing Skukuza at 11:45 and arriving in Cape Town at 14:35.
- After a morning drive, transfer to Skukuza, then drive or take a transfer from Cape Town International to Franschhoek (allow about 1 to 1.5 hours).
- Arrive in time for Christmas Eve dinner. Reserve it now; estates often run set menus.
Days 6-7 - 25 and 26 December: Christmas in the Winelands
- Plan Christmas lunch at an estate. Book early, check the deposit and cancellation terms, and ask how children are catered for.
- On 26 December, choose a slow tasting day or a drive through Stellenbosch, about 30 km away. Use a driver or a tram service rather than driving between tastings.
- Read the Cape Winelands destination page for estate areas and travel times.
Day 8 - Sunday 27 December: move to Cape Town
- Transfer to Cape Town for five nights in one hotel. This avoids changing rooms on the city’s busiest days.
- Choose by how you want New Year’s Eve to work. The V&A Waterfront puts the main celebration within walking distance, while Camps Bay or Bantry Bay give a beach and sunset atmosphere. Compare them in where to stay in Cape Town.
Days 9-11 - 28 to 30 December: Cape Town
Spread these across three days and keep one flexible day for wind or cloud:
- Table Mountain. Go early and check the cableway’s status that morning; wind closes it.
- Cape Peninsula. Visit Cape Point and Boulders Beach penguins, starting early to beat the crowds.
- Atlantic seaboard and Constantia. Spend a beach morning, then visit an estate in the afternoon.
From 1 November 2026, SANParks lists international daily conservation fees of R592 per adult and R288 per child at the Cape of Good Hope section, and R282 per adult and R138 per child at Boulders. Both come from the 2026/27 fee schedule and are subject to change without prior notice.
Day 12 - Thursday 31 December: New Year’s Eve
- The V&A Waterfront listed its 2026 New Year’s Eve celebration from 18:00 on 31 December to 01:00 on 1 January. See Christmas and New Year in Cape Town for the full listing and other options.
- Book any restaurant dinner now, and plan your route home before going out.
Day 13 - Friday 1 January: depart, or stay one more night
- New Year’s Day is a public holiday, and Cape Town’s beaches are busy.
- Choose an evening flight, or add one night and fly on Saturday 2 January if you want a calmer last day.
What it costs: fixed fees you can calculate now
These fees come from the SANParks 2026/27 schedule. Accommodation, flights and lodge rates vary by property and availability, so they are not quoted here.
| Item | International adult | International child |
|---|---|---|
| Kruger National Park, per day (if your stay pays SANParks fees) | R692 | R345 |
| Cape of Good Hope, per visit day | R592 | R288 |
| Boulders penguins, per visit day | R282 | R138 |
Private reserves such as the Sabi Sand charge their own conservation and gate levies, usually per person per night. Ask your lodge whether these are included.
Malaria and health
SANParks describes Kruger as a malaria area, with the highest risk from November to April. Cape Town and the Winelands are not malaria areas. The CDC summarises the timing for the common options:
| Medication | Start | Continue after leaving |
|---|---|---|
| Atovaquone-proguanil | 1-2 days before | 7 days |
| Doxycycline | 1-2 days before | 4 weeks |
| Mefloquine | At least 2 weeks before | 4 weeks |
Get personal medical advice. For families with young children or travellers who prefer to avoid medication, the malaria-free safari guide offers alternatives.
Book in this order
- The safari lodge for 21-24 December. It is the smallest inventory and the hardest to replace.
- The Cape Town-Skukuza flights, once the lodge is held. Check the days of operation for your dates.
- The Cape Town hotel for 27 December to 1 January. Five consecutive peak nights are hard to find late.
- The Franschhoek stay and the Christmas Eve and Christmas lunch reservations.
- Airport and Winelands transfers.
- Time-sensitive activities, such as Robben Island tickets if wanted. Keep weather-dependent plans flexible.
If you are booking late, read the last-minute December holiday guide before you pay any deposits. The South Africa December holidays guide has the full festive calendar.
Variations
- Families with young children. Swap Kruger for a malaria-free reserve and keep the rest of the route. See your first family safari.
- A shorter trip. Drop the Franschhoek nights, spend Christmas in Cape Town and keep the safari before it.
- A longer trip. Add a few nights on the Garden Route between 2 and 9 January, after the New Year rush. Use the 7-day Garden Route itinerary as the template.

Questions travellers ask
Is 12 nights enough for South Africa over Christmas and New Year?
Yes, for two regions plus the Winelands. Twelve nights covers Cape Town, a three-night safari and three nights in Franschhoek without daily driving. Adding the Garden Route as well would mean moving on peak days, so save it for a longer trip or swap it for the Winelands.
Should I do the safari before or after Christmas?
Before. Doing the safari from 21 to 24 December puts the hardest booking at the start, avoids flying on New Year's Day, and leaves Christmas and New Year in places with festive dining. It also means you are already back in the Western Cape when the busiest domestic travel starts.
How do you get from Cape Town to Kruger in December?
Airlink operates a direct Cape Town-Skukuza service. Its schedule page lists 4Z651 departing Cape Town at 10:30 and arriving at Skukuza at 12:55, and 4Z652 departing Skukuza at 11:45 and arriving in Cape Town at 14:35. Confirm that the flights operate on your exact dates before booking the lodge.
Do I need malaria tablets for this itinerary?
Ask a travel clinic. SANParks describes Kruger as a malaria area, with the highest risk from November to April. Cape Town and the Winelands are not malaria areas. For a three-night safari, the CDC notes that atovaquone-proguanil starts one to two days before entering the area and continues for seven days after leaving.
Where should I spend New Year's Eve in Cape Town?
Stay at or near the V&A Waterfront if you want the main public celebration within walking distance. The Waterfront listed its 2026 New Year's Eve celebration from 18:00 on 31 December to 01:00 on 1 January. Book a hotel that lets you walk back rather than relying on peak-night transport.
