Garden Route festive season 2026/27

Garden Route in December 2026: Plett, Knysna and Tsitsikamma at Peak Season

The Garden Route in December is warm, green and very busy, especially in Plettenberg Bay and Knysna. Base yourself in one place rather than moving every night, because accommodation from about 16 December to 3 January is the hardest part to secure. Expect around 22 °C maxima and short showers. Do the popular walks early in the day: Robberg's Point Circuit is 9.2 km and takes about four hours. Pay SANParks fees of R422 per international adult per day at Storms River Mouth, and if you can, travel before 10 December, when public schools close.

How December changes the Garden Route

The Garden Route runs along the N2 between roughly Mossel Bay and the Tsitsikamma section of the Garden Route National Park. Most of the year it is a relaxed self-drive coast. In December it becomes a full summer holiday region:

  • families arrive from Gauteng and the Western Cape after schools close;
  • holiday homes fill;
  • restaurants take reservations days ahead;
  • beach parking and the N2 through Knysna and Plettenberg Bay slow down.

This guide is about timing and logistics for 1 December 2026 to mid-January 2027. For a full route, use the 7-day Garden Route itinerary or the 10-day Cape Town and Garden Route itinerary, and apply the December adjustments below.

December weather on the Garden Route

The Knysna figures below are modelled averages from Climate-Data.org, which is less authoritative than an official weather station record. They are still useful for comparing months.

Month Average max Average min Rain Rainy days
October — — about 87 mm —
November — — about 94 mm —
December about 22 °C about 16 °C about 63 mm about 13

December is cooler than Cape Town or Kruger and greener than the Western Cape interior. Rain is spread across many days, but it often arrives as passing showers rather than washing out the day. Keep one indoor or forest alternative for each beach day.

Park and reserve fees

SANParks conservation fees from 1 November 2026, per person per day, from the official 2026/27 schedule (“subject to change without prior notice”):

Section International adult / child SADC adult / child South African adult / child
Tsitsikamma - Storms River Mouth R422 / R211 R179 / R90 R85 / R43
Tsitsikamma - Nature’s Valley R190 / R94 R81 / R40 R76 / R38
Knysna section R254 / R126 R111 / R55 R54 / R27
Wilderness section R270 / R136 R133 / R67 R63 / R32

Robberg Nature Reserve near Plettenberg Bay is managed by CapeNature, not SANParks. On 19 October 2026 the CapeNature Robberg page listed two different fee figures: day-access conservation fees of R80 per adult and R60 per child (ages 4 to 17), and an older permit line of R75 and R55. The page also gives conflicting operating hours. One line says 07:00-18:00 from 1 October to 30 April, with no entry after 17:00. Before you go, confirm with the reserve on +27 (0)87 087 3937.

Robberg trails in summer

Trail Distance Estimated time December advice
Witsand Circuit 5.5 km About 2 hours The best family option; start early for parking
Point Circuit 9.2 km About 4 hours Strenuous; CapeNature does not recommend it for young children

Distances and times are from CapeNature. Carry water, sun protection and food. Do not stand near cliff edges in strong wind, and do not hike alone. Begin at gate opening on a peak-season day, because midday heat and parking pressure build quickly.

Where to base yourself

Base Best for December tradeoff
Plettenberg Bay Beaches, the social scene, families, Robberg and easy Tsitsikamma day trips The busiest town; peak pricing and minimum stays are common
Knysna The lagoon, restaurants, forest walks and a central position Town traffic on the N2 through the centre
Wilderness and Sedgefield Quieter beaches, lakes and closer access to George Airport Less dining choice and fewer evening options
Tsitsikamma (Storms River) Coastal hiking, the suspension bridge and a nature-first stay Remote; fewer services and restaurants

Knysna lies about 60 km east of George and about 33 km west of Plettenberg Bay on the N2. Short distances do not mean short drive times between 16 December and 3 January.

How to make the peak easier

  1. Arrive before 10 December or after 6 January if you can. These dates avoid the sharpest part of the domestic peak.
  2. Book one base for the peak nights. Moving every night means more check-in times, more luggage handling and more peak-date bookings.
  3. Reserve Christmas and New Year meals now. Ask about set menus, deposits and child policies.
  4. Start beach and trail days early. Parking at popular beaches and at Robberg fills during the morning.
  5. Use George Airport for flexibility. Flying to George and collecting a car avoids a long festive drive from Cape Town. Peak-date hire-car availability varies by supplier, so book it with the accommodation.
  6. Keep one flexible day. Wind, rain or crowding can move a boat trip or a beach day.

Combine the Garden Route with Cape Town or safari

The Garden Route pairs naturally with Cape Town before or after the coast. The Eastern Cape’s malaria-free reserves are reachable from the eastern end of the route. Addo’s international daily conservation fee is R565 per adult from 1 November 2026. Compare options in the malaria-free safari guide and the South Africa December holidays guide.

Read the Garden Route destination page for general context, and the last-minute December holiday guide if your dates are still open.

Questions travellers ask

Is the Garden Route busy in December?

Yes. It is one of South Africa's main domestic summer holiday regions, and Plettenberg Bay and Knysna are especially busy. The public-school break runs from 10 December 2026 to 12 January 2027, and the busiest stretch is around 16 December to early January.

What is the weather like on the Garden Route in December?

Mild to warm. Knysna averages a maximum of about 22 °C and a minimum of about 16 °C in December, with about 63 mm of rain over roughly 13 rainy days, according to modelled Climate-Data.org figures. Showers are often short, and December is drier than October and November.

Where should I stay on the Garden Route over Christmas?

Plettenberg Bay suits beach-focused families and social holidays. Knysna suits lagoon, forest and restaurant access. Wilderness and Sedgefield are calmer. Tsitsikamma suits nature-focused travellers. Choose one base for the peak nights and take day trips rather than changing hotels daily.

How much does it cost to enter Tsitsikamma in December 2026?

From 1 November 2026, the SANParks daily conservation fee at Storms River Mouth is R422 per international adult and R211 per child. SADC nationals pay R179 and R90, and South Africans pay R85 and R43. The fee at Nature's Valley is lower. The schedule is subject to change without prior notice.

Is there a New Year's Eve event in Plettenberg Bay in 2026?

Yes. Wanderbay NYE 2026 is listed on Howler for 31 December 2026 from 17:00 until 02:00 on 1 January 2027 at Cairnbrogie on Airport Road in Kranshoek, Plettenberg Bay. Check the ticket page for the current line-up, age policy and transport arrangements.
