South Africa December Holidays 2026: Dates, Weather and Where to Go

December is South Africa's peak domestic holiday month, so the calendar matters as much as the destination. Public schools close on 9 December 2026 and reopen on 13 January 2027, and the public holidays fall on 16, 25 and 26 December and 1 January. Cape Town is the driest choice, with about 13 mm of December rain at the airport. Kruger is hot and wet, with a 33.7 °C average maximum at Skukuza. Durban is warm, humid and rainy, and the Garden Route sits in between. Book accommodation for 20 December to 2 January first, then flights, then everything else.

Which South Africa December holiday fits you

South Africa in December is a summer holiday shared by international visitors and a very large domestic travelling public. Schools close, many businesses slow down from mid-December, and coastal towns fill quickly. The right choice depends on three questions: how much heat and rain you will accept, whether you are willing to take malaria precautions, and which dates you can move.

If you want Strongest December choice Main tradeoff Detailed guide
Dry weather, city, beaches, food and wine Cape Town and the Winelands Peak prices, wind and crowds from Christmas to New Year Christmas and New Year in Cape Town

December 2026 and January 2027 calendar

Status on 19 October 2026:

Date Day What happens Planning effect
13 Oct to about 26 Nov 2026 — Matric (National Senior Certificate) exams Domestic family travel is still low
9 Dec 2026 Wednesday Last day for public-school learners Gauteng-to-coast traffic builds from 10 December
16 Dec 2026 Wednesday Day of Reconciliation (public holiday) A common unofficial start of the festive season
24 Dec 2026 Thursday Christmas Eve (not a public holiday) Early closures are likely
25 Dec 2026 Friday Christmas Day (public holiday) Reduced services; meals need advance reservations
26 Dec 2026 Saturday Day of Goodwill (public holiday) Peak leisure demand continues
31 Dec 2026 Thursday New Year’s Eve (not a public holiday) Events, restaurant and transport demand peak
1 Jan 2027 Friday New Year’s Day (public holiday) Beaches and roads at their busiest
13 Jan 2027 Wednesday Public-school learners return Return traffic peaks in the days before

The public holiday dates are published by the South African Government. Under the Public Holidays Act, only a holiday that falls on a Sunday moves to the Monday. Because 26 December 2026 is a Saturday, there is no additional Monday holiday on 28 December. The 2027 return date is set in the Department of Basic Education school calendar for 2027 (Government Gazette 52178).

The planning consequence is simple. The window from 10 December 2026 to 12 January 2027 is the domestic peak. The sharpest part is about 16 December to 3 January. The first nine days of December are usually the better-value December window, because schools are still in session.

December weather by region

The figures below are long-term averages, not forecasts. Cape Town, Durban and Skukuza use the World Meteorological Organization 1991-2020 normal period. The Knysna figures come from a modelled climate dataset and are less authoritative.

Location Average max Average min December rain Rain days Character
Cape Town (airport) 25.8 °C 15.6 °C 12.8 mm 2.6 Dry, sunny, often windy
Knysna (Garden Route) about 22 °C about 16 °C about 63 mm about 13 Mild; showers are common but usually short
Skukuza (Kruger) 33.7 °C 19.9 °C 96.3 mm — Hot; afternoon thunderstorms
Durban 26.7 °C 20.2 °C 120.4 mm 11.0 (1 mm or more) Warm, humid, frequently wet

What the numbers mean on the ground

Cape Town records about 338 hours of December sunshine, and the UV index reaches the extreme range, so sun protection matters on every outdoor day. The summer southeasterly wind is the main weather disruption. It can close the Table Mountain Cableway and make exposed beaches uncomfortable. Atlantic Seaboard water, such as at Camps Bay and Clifton, is typically around 10 °C. False Bay beaches such as Muizenberg are noticeably warmer and can exceed 20 °C in summer.

The Garden Route is milder and greener. December is drier there than October and November, but a wet day is still possible, so plan an indoor or forest alternative. Read the Garden Route December guide for specific towns.

Kruger is the hottest option. Skukuza’s December record is 46.3 °C. Rain arrives mostly as late-afternoon storms rather than all-day rain, which is why early-morning drives are the backbone of a summer safari. The Kruger December guide covers heat, gate times and malaria.

Durban has the warmest sea of the four, but it also has the highest December rainfall and humidity, at 79% average relative humidity.

Park fees for December 2026

SANParks’ new conservation-fee year starts on 1 November 2026, so the new rates apply to December trips. These are daily fees per person from the official 2026/27 SANParks fee schedule, which is marked “subject to change without prior notice”.

Park or section International adult / child SADC adult / child South African adult / child
Kruger National Park R692 / R345 R296 / R147 R140 / R70
Table Mountain - Cape of Good Hope R592 / R288 R242 / R124 R115 / R57
Table Mountain - Boulders (penguins) R282 / R138 R118 / R59 R57 / R27
Addo Elephant National Park R565 / R283 R242 / R121 R115 / R57

Garden Route - Knysna section R254 / R126 R111 / R55 R54 / R27

These are conservation fees only. Accommodation, guided activities, the Table Mountain Cableway and Kirstenbosch are priced separately. SANParks WILD Card holders do not pay daily conservation fees at participating parks.

Book in this order

  1. Accommodation for the peak nights. Cover 20 December to 2 January first. Change the dates or the region before accepting a poorly located or unsuitable property.
  2. Domestic flights. Routes into George, Skukuza, Hoedspruit and Kruger Mpumalanga International are served by a small number of aircraft, so festive-date seats are limited.
  3. Hire car or private transfers. Peak-date vehicle availability, one-way fees and collection hours vary by supplier and airport.
  4. Christmas and New Year meals. Ask for the menu, seating time, deposit and child policy.
  5. Timed activities. Keep weather-dependent activities, such as Table Mountain and boat trips, movable.

Malaria and health

Kruger and the Greater Kruger private reserves are in a malaria-risk area. SANParks describes the risk as usually low, even in the summer months, but it is highest from November to April. The CDC notes that atovaquone-proguanil can be started one to two days before travel, which suits late planners. Get advice from a travel-health clinician rather than choosing a drug from a guide. Cape Town, the Winelands, the Garden Route, Addo and Madikwe are not malaria-risk areas.

Common December mistakes

  • Assuming 28 December is a holiday. It is a normal Monday in 2026.
  • Booking Atlantic beaches for swimming. The water is cold; choose False Bay or a pool for swimming.
  • Planning midday safari activity. December heat makes early and late drives the useful hours.
  • Adding too many transfers between Christmas and New Year. Every extra move adds a peak-date booking.
  • Relying on last year’s event pages. Use only programmes dated for 2026/27.

Last checked

Public holidays, school calendar dates, SANParks fees and malaria information were checked against the cited official sources on 19 October 2026. Climate figures are long-term averages and do not change, but forecasts should be checked from 10 days before travel. Recheck SANParks fees and school dates monthly until December.

Questions travellers ask

When are the South African school holidays in December 2026?

Public-school learners finish on Wednesday 9 December 2026 and return on Wednesday 13 January 2027, according to the Department of Basic Education calendar. The public-school break therefore runs from 10 December 2026 to 12 January 2027. Independent schools set their own dates.

Which public holidays fall in the December 2026 holiday season?

Day of Reconciliation on Wednesday 16 December, Christmas Day on Friday 25 December, Day of Goodwill on Saturday 26 December 2026 and New Year's Day on Friday 1 January 2027. None falls on a Sunday, so there is no additional Monday holiday in this period.

Where is the best weather in South Africa in December?

For dry, sunny weather, Cape Town and the Western Cape are the strongest choice. Cape Town International Airport averages 12.8 mm of rain on 2.6 rain days in December, with about 338 hours of sunshine. Kruger and Durban both average roughly 96 to 120 mm of December rain, mostly as storms and showers.

Is Kruger worth visiting in December?

Yes, if you are comfortable with heat, afternoon storms and malaria precautions. The bush is green, many antelope have young and summer migrant birds are present. Skukuza averages a 33.7 °C December maximum, so morning and late-afternoon drives matter. Travellers who want to avoid malaria medication should consider a malaria-free reserve instead.

How far ahead should I book a December holiday in South Africa?

As early as possible. On 19 October 2026 the practical priority is accommodation covering 20 December to 2 January, then domestic flights and hire cars, then festive meals and timed activities. If your first-choice property is full, change the dates or the base before compromising on location or transport.
