Sabi Sand costs explained
How Much Does a Sabi Sand Safari Cost in 2027?
A luxury Sabi Sand safari commonly costs tens of thousands of rand per person per night. Published 2026/27 Sabi Sabi rates range from R29,600 to R44,000 per person sharing per night before the separate reserve levy, while ultra-luxury properties can exceed R50,000. A realistic comparison must add both travellers, every night, levies, transfers, flights and peak surcharges.

Published Sabi Sand rates for 2027
A Sabi Sand safari is normally priced per person sharing per night, not per room. Published rates checked on 15 October 2026 show a wide range:
| Lodge example | Published base rate | Rate validity |
|---|---|---|
| Sabi Sabi Bush Lodge luxury suite | R29,600 per person per night | 1 March 2026 to 28 February 2027 |
| Sabi Sabi Selati Camp luxury suite | R31,800 per person per night | 1 March 2026 to 28 February 2027 |
| Sabi Sabi Little Bush Camp luxury suite | R32,900 per person per night | 1 March 2026 to 28 February 2027 |
| Sabi Sabi Earth Lodge luxury suite | R44,000 per person per night | 1 March 2026 to 28 February 2027 |
| Singita Ebony suite | About R51,665-R60,470 per person per night by 2027 season | Check exact travel dates |
These are supplier rate examples, not Herons House offers. Rates change, availability controls what can actually be booked, and lodge categories are not identical.
Start with the Sabi Sand destination guide if the reserve, sectors and airport choices are still unclear.
Three-night cost examples for two people
The correct starting calculation is:
$$ \text{base stay}=\text{nightly rate}\times 2\text{ travellers}\times 3\text{ nights} $$
Sabi Sabi separately lists a Sabie Game Reserve conservation levy of R450 per person per night through 28 February 2027. Therefore:
| Example | Accommodation | Levy for two, three nights | Starting total |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bush Lodge | R177,600 | R2,700 | R180,300 |
| Selati Camp | R190,800 | R2,700 | R193,500 |
| Little Bush Camp | R197,400 | R2,700 | R200,100 |
| Earth Lodge | R264,000 | R2,700 | R266,700 |
These totals still exclude flights, road or lodge transfers, spa treatments, premium wine, gratuities and personal spending. The published levy increases to R495 per person per night from 1 March 2027; accommodation must then be checked against the applicable 2027/28 tariff sheet.
What the lodge rate usually includes
At an inclusive Sabi Sand lodge, the base rate commonly covers:
- accommodation in the selected room category;
- breakfast, lunch and dinner;
- morning and afternoon or evening shared game drives;
- guided walks when conditions and policy allow;
- house drinks or a defined beverage selection;
- Wi-Fi and sometimes limited laundry;
- lodge airstrip transfers when using that lodge’s designated airstrip.
The phrase all-inclusive is not enough. Ask for the written list because French Champagne, reserve wines, private vehicles, premium activities, external airport transfers and conservation levies may remain additional.
What is normally extra
Flights and transfers
The lowest airfare may produce the highest door-to-door cost. Compare:
- a commercial flight to Skukuza or Hoedspruit plus road transfer;
- a flight to Kruger Mpumalanga plus a longer transfer;
- a scheduled lodge-airstrip service with strict baggage limits;
- a private road transfer from Johannesburg, which consumes much of a day;
- a self-drive route only where the lodge and gate arrangements permit it.
A private lodge transfer is not the same as a safari drive. Confirm the vehicle, journey time, child restraint, gate deadline and whether the price is one-way or return.
Conservation and tourism levies
Levies are often charged per person per night and can change annually. Singita, for example, identifies conservation, tourism and carbon-related charges separately from some published room rates. Never assume one reserve’s levy structure applies to another.
Private safari vehicles
Shared drives are the normal inclusion. A private vehicle can materially increase the total and may be compulsory for children below the shared-drive age. Obtain the daily amount and guide allocation in writing.
Gratuities and personal costs
Guide, tracker and lodge-staff gratuities are generally discretionary and separate. Spa treatments, boutique purchases, premium cellar selections and specialist photography support can also sit outside the package.
Christmas and peak-season pricing
Sabi Sabi publishes a 15% Christmas peak surcharge for bookings arriving from 20 December to 5 January, regardless of checkout date.
For a three-night Bush Lodge example:
$$ R177,600\times1.15+R2,700=R206,940 $$
That is before transport or gratuities. Other lodges define their own festive dates, minimum stays and non-refundable deadlines, so never transfer this exact surcharge across the reserve.
What about GBP or USD conversions?
Quote and contract the safari in its supplier currency first. A GBP or USD conversion is a planning aid, not a fixed price unless the operator explicitly guarantees it.
The Bank of England reference around the research date was approximately GBP1 to R21.87. At that indicative rate:
- R180,300 is roughly GBP8,244 per couple;
- R266,700 is roughly GBP12,194 per couple.
A card, bank or tour operator can use a different conversion and add fees. Display the exchange rate and date beside every converted number.
Three nights or four?
Three nights is the practical minimum because arrival and departure reduce useful safari time. Four nights normally produces six to eight drive opportunities, allows the lodge rhythm to settle and gives more resilience when a flight is late or one drive is quiet.
Do not shorten the safari simply to make the headline price look lower. A two-night stay with expensive air transfers can produce poor value per useful drive.
How to compare two lodge quotes
Place the same items in each column:
| Cost component | Quote A | Quote B |
|---|---|---|
| Room category and occupancy | ||
| Base rate for all travellers and nights | ||
| Conservation or reserve levies | ||
| Shared drives and walks | ||
| Meals and drinks | ||
| Airport or airstrip transfers | ||
| Domestic or charter flights | ||
| Private vehicle | ||
| Children and single supplements | ||
| Festive surcharge | ||
| Cancellation and payment terms | ||
| Final total in supplier currency |
Then compare the experience: lodge size, guide structure, traversing area, guests per vehicle, child policy and access. The Kruger National Park versus Greater Kruger guide explains why a public camp and a private lodge cannot be compared on room price alone.
Ways to control cost without weakening the safari
- Travel outside Christmas, Easter and the most constrained dates.
- Select a smaller room category at the right lodge rather than a villa at the wrong one.
- Stay four nights when a verified stay-pay offer produces a better nightly value.
- Use the airport that minimizes the complete transfer, not merely the airfare.
- Avoid paying for a hire car that sits unused while lodge drives are included.
- Confirm whether house drinks and laundry meaningfully reduce incidental spending.
- Place safari at the point in the itinerary that avoids backtracking.
Families should also review the first family safari guide before treating the cheapest published room as bookable for children.
Rate-check discipline
This guide uses rates checked on 15 October 2026. Recheck lodge tariffs and exchange-rate conversions quarterly, and always obtain a date-specific written quote before publishing or paying. A useful price guide shows its assumptions; it does not imply that a rack rate equals live availability.
Questions travellers ask
How much is a three-night Sabi Sand safari for two people?
Using Sabi Sabi's published rates valid through February 2027, three nights for two start around R180,300 at Bush Lodge and reach R266,700 at Earth Lodge after the stated nightly conservation levy, before flights, road transfers, gratuities and festive surcharges.
Are game drives and meals included in Sabi Sand rates?
They commonly are, but inclusions vary. Sabi Sabi includes shared drives, walks, meals and many drinks; airport transfers, spa treatments, premium wine, gratuities and the separate conservation levy remain outside the base rate.
Why are Sabi Sand prices quoted per person?
Private safari lodges often publish per-person-sharing nightly rates because meals and guided activities form part of the stay. Multiply the rate by travellers and nights before comparing it with a hotel room rate.
Is December more expensive in Sabi Sand?
It can be. Sabi Sabi publishes a 15% Christmas peak surcharge for arrivals from 20 December to 5 January. Other lodges apply their own peak periods, minimum stays and cancellation terms.
Is a cheaper Sabi Sand lodge poor value?
Not necessarily. Price reflects brand, room, land access, lodge size, inclusions and demand. Compare guiding, traversing, vehicle occupancy and total cost rather than assuming the highest tariff creates the best fit.
