Kruger in December 2026
Kruger Safari in December 2026: Heat, Rain, Malaria, Gates and Fees
December is green season in Kruger, which brings young animals and storms, heat and malaria precautions. A December Kruger safari works well if you plan around the heat and the rain. Skukuza averages a 33.7 °C maximum and 96 mm of rain in December. Entrance gates open at 05:30 and close at 18:30, and international visitors pay R692 per adult per day from 1 November 2026. Kruger is a malaria-risk area, with the highest risk from November to April, so arrange medical advice before booking.

Who December suits
December is Kruger’s summer, or green season. It suits travellers who value lush scenery, birdlife, young animals and atmosphere more than maximum sightings per hour. It is less ideal for travellers who struggle with heat, want the thinnest vegetation for game viewing, or would rather avoid malaria medication.
| You are | December verdict | Better alternative if not |
|---|---|---|
| A photographer who wants storms, green backdrops and newborn antelope | Strong fit | — |
| A first-time visitor focused mainly on seeing the Big Five quickly | Workable, especially in a private reserve with off-road driving | Dry-season dates from about June to October |
| A family with children under the age suitable for antimalarials | Weak fit | Malaria-free safaris |
| Pregnant, or planning pregnancy | Avoid malaria areas, as the CDC advises | Madikwe, Pilanesberg, Addo or the Waterberg |
| Heat-sensitive | Choose a lodge with air conditioning and a pool | A Cape Town and Winelands holiday |
Skukuza weather data
Skukuza sits at 271 m in the southern Kruger. The figures below are 1991-2020 normals.
| Month | Average max | Average min | Average rain |
|---|---|---|---|
| November | 32.8 °C | 18.6 °C | 85.7 mm |
| December | 33.7 °C | 19.9 °C | 96.3 mm |
| January | 33.2 °C | 20.3 °C | 110.9 mm |
The December mean temperature is 26.8 °C and the record December high is 46.3 °C. Annual rainfall at Skukuza is about 770 mm, and most of it falls in summer.
In practice, summer rain in Kruger usually arrives as afternoon thunderstorms. An all-day downpour is less common. Structure each day like this:
- 05:30 to about 10:00. The best wildlife hours; the gates open at 05:30.
- Midday. Rest, swim or stay in shade. Animals do the same.
- Late afternoon. Activity increases again, but watch for storms and the 18:30 gate closure.
What you see in December
- Young animals. Impala typically give birth in a short window in early summer, so lambs are a feature of December drives. Lambing also attracts predators.
- Birds. Summer migrants are present. SANParks lists 507 bird species for Kruger.
- Green landscape. The bush is dense and leafy. Animals disperse because surface water is plentiful, so sightings can take longer than in the dry season.
- Dramatic light. Storm build-ups and clearing skies give strong photographic conditions.
Kruger supports 147 mammal and 336 tree species, according to SANParks vital information.
Gate times and late arrivals
These are the SANParks entrance-gate times checked on 19 October 2026. SANParks notes they may change without notice.
| Month | Entrance gates | Camp gates |
|---|---|---|
| November | 05:30-18:30 | 04:30-18:30 |
| December | 05:30-18:30 | 04:30-18:30 |
| January | 05:30-18:30 | 04:30-18:30 |
Latecomers at entrance gates are refused entry. Paid late-entry escorts are available until 21:00 for guests with booked accommodation at the matching camp. The fee is currently R500 per vehicle, and escorts run only at these gates:
- Paul Kruger (for Skukuza)
- Numbi (for Pretoriuskop)
- Malelane (for Berg-en-Dal and Malelane)
- Crocodile Bridge
- Punda Maria
- Orpen
There is no late admission at Phabeni, Phalaborwa or Pafuri.
Driving from Johannesburg on a festive weekend can take longer than normal. SANParks lists road distances from Johannesburg of about 411 km to Numbi, 428 km to Malelane and 460 km to Paul Kruger Gate. Plan to reach the gate with a wide margin before 18:30.
Rules that affect self-drive visitors
| Rule | SANParks requirement |
|---|---|
| Speed limit | 50 km/h on tar, 40 km/h on gravel |
| Accommodation | Check-in 14:00, check-out 10:00 |
| Quiet hours | 21:30-06:00 |
| Drones | Prohibited |
| Roadside assistance | 0800 030 666 |
Conservation fees from 1 November 2026
These daily per-person fees come from the SANParks 2026/27 schedule, which is “subject to change without prior notice”.
| Visitor category | Adult per day | Child per day |
|---|---|---|
| International | R692 | R345 |
| SADC national | R296 | R147 |
| South African citizen or resident | R140 | R70 |
Example. An international family of two adults and two children staying four days inside Kruger pays (2 × R692 + 2 × R345) × 4 = R8,296 in conservation fees alone, before accommodation or activities.
These fees apply to SANParks-managed Kruger. Private reserves in the Greater Kruger, such as the Sabi Sand, charge their own levies, which lodges usually include in or add to their quotes. Ask whether the quote includes them. See the Sabi Sand safari cost guide.
Malaria in December
The SANParks malaria page says Kruger and Mapungubwe are the two SANParks parks in malaria-risk areas. The risk is “usually low, even in the summer months”, but it is highest from November to April. SANParks advises chemoprophylaxis.
The CDC’s Yellow Book malaria chapter sets out the main options:
| Medication | When to start | Continue after leaving the area | Relevant limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Atovaquone-proguanil | 1-2 days before | 7 days | Suits last-minute travel |
| Doxycycline | 1-2 days before | 4 weeks | Not for children under 8 or during pregnancy |
| Mefloquine | At least 2 weeks before | 4 weeks | Not suitable for last-minute travel |
This is not medical advice. A travel-health clinician should choose the medication based on your age, health, other medicines and pregnancy status. No antimalarial is 100% effective, so bite prevention still matters:
- Mosquitoes bite mainly between dusk and dawn.
- Wear long sleeves after sunset.
- Use repellent.
- Sleep under nets or in screened rooms. SANParks says all Kruger accommodation has netted screens.
SANParks gives an incubation period of 12 to 35 days. Any fever after the trip needs urgent malaria testing, and you should tell the doctor that you visited Kruger. The Skukuza doctors can be reached on +27 13 735 5638.
If medication is not an option, compare malaria-free safaris in South Africa.
Rest camp, Greater Kruger lodge or private concession
| Option | December strengths | December tradeoffs |
|---|---|---|
| SANParks rest camp, self-drive | Lowest accommodation cost; freedom to explore | Heat in the car, gate deadlines, festive-season demand, no off-road driving |
| Private lodge in the Greater Kruger | Guided open-vehicle drives, off-road tracking, bush walks, air conditioning and pools at many lodges | Festive pricing, minimum stays and peak-date deposits at many lodges |
| Private concession inside Kruger | Exclusive-use areas with lodge-style guiding | Very limited inventory over the holidays |
For the detailed comparison, see where to stay in Kruger National Park vs the Greater Kruger.
SANParks booking note. SANParks has said the new Skukuza units can be booked only directly with the camp until 31 October 2026, and on the SANParks website from 1 November 2026. Check the live notice before relying on it.
Getting there
- Fly to Skukuza. Airlink’s Skukuza Airport schedule listed daily direct services from Cape Town and Johannesburg on 19 October 2026. Skukuza is useful for southern Kruger and the Sabi Sand. Check that the schedule covers your festive dates.
- Fly to Hoedspruit or Kruger Mpumalanga International. These suit the central Greater Kruger and the southern park respectively. Lodges normally arrange the road transfer.
- Drive from Johannesburg. The drive is about 410 to 490 km depending on the gate. Hazyview is 57 km from Skukuza.
December booking checklist
- Confirm whether anyone in the group cannot take antimalarials. If someone cannot, plan a malaria-free route.
- Book safari accommodation before flights. Inventory is the scarcer resource.
- Ask private lodges about minimum stays, Christmas and New Year supplements, compulsory festive dinners and child age policies.
- Match flight times to lodge transfer times and the 18:30 gate closure.
- Book a clinic appointment for malaria advice at least two weeks before travel. This keeps every medication option open.
- Pack for heat and rain: a breathable long-sleeve layer, a rain shell, sunscreen and repellent.
To put Kruger in a wider trip, read the South Africa December holidays guide or follow the 12-night Christmas and New Year itinerary.

Questions travellers ask
Is December a good time for a Kruger safari?
It is a good time for green landscapes, young antelope, summer migrant birds and dramatic storms. It is not the easiest time for spotting animals, because thick vegetation and widely available surface water spread wildlife out. Skukuza averages a 33.7 °C December maximum, so plan drives for early morning and late afternoon.
Do I need malaria tablets for Kruger in December?
Kruger is a malaria-risk area and SANParks says the risk is highest from November to April. SANParks advises chemoprophylaxis, while describing the overall risk as usually low. A travel-health clinician should decide which drug suits you. The CDC lists atovaquone-proguanil, doxycycline and mefloquine as options and notes that atovaquone-proguanil can start one to two days before travel.
What time do the Kruger gates open in December?
SANParks lists December entrance-gate hours of 05:30 to 18:30 and camp-gate hours of 04:30 to 18:30. Latecomers at entrance gates are refused entry. Paid late-entry escorts until 21:00 operate only at selected gates for guests with booked camp accommodation. Times can change without notice.
How much are Kruger conservation fees in December 2026?
From 1 November 2026, the SANParks daily conservation fee for Kruger is R692 per international adult and R345 per international child. SADC residents pay R296 and R147, and South Africans pay R140 and R70. The schedule is marked subject to change without prior notice.
Is Kruger very busy over Christmas?
Yes. The public-school holiday runs from 10 December 2026 to 12 January 2027, and SANParks rest camps and private lodges see high demand over Christmas and New Year. Book accommodation first, expect minimum stays at many private lodges, and confirm road and gate conditions closer to the date.
