South Africa costs from the UK

How Much Does a South Africa Trip From the UK Cost?

The cost of a South Africa trip from the UK depends mainly on three choices: when you fly, which safari you choose and the standard of your hotels. Price the trip in two parts. The return flight from London is a separate line that rises sharply from mid-December to early January. The land arrangements cover hotels, safari, transfers, park fees and activities. Herons House tailor-made journeys start from USD 1,998 per person for six nights in Cape Town, with flights quoted separately. A private safari lodge in Greater Kruger is usually the largest single cost.

What is included in a South Africa trip cost?

Every South Africa trip cost from the UK is made of the same parts. Separate them before comparing quotes, because two quotes with similar totals can include very different things.

Cost line What it covers What moves the price
International flight Return London–Cape Town, or open-jaw via Johannesburg Travel dates, airline, cabin, baggage
Cape Town hotel Usually four to six nights Area, sea view, season, minimum-stay rules
Safari Lodge, game drives, meals and levies National park camp or private reserve
Domestic flights Cape Town–Kruger area, or Johannesburg connections Date, airport, baggage limits
Transfers and drivers Airport collections, private driving days Private or shared, distances
Park fees and entry tickets Kruger, Table Mountain, Cape Point, Boulders Beach Fixed published rates in rand
Food, wine and tips Restaurants, tastings, gratuities Personal choice
Insurance Travel and medical cover Age, activities, cover level

A trip that looks cheap may have left out the safari levies or the domestic flight. A quote that looks expensive may include everything. Ask for the lines to be listed.

How much are flights from the UK?

The return flight is usually the largest cost after the safari, and it is the one that changes most with dates.

  • Mid-December to early January: the most expensive window. UK school holidays overlap with South Africa’s own long summer holiday, which runs from 9 December 2026 to 13 January 2027 for public schools.
  • Late January to March: still high summer in Cape Town, with better availability once the festive rush ends.
  • May to August: South Africa’s winter. Fares and hotel rates are often lower, but Cape Town is cooler and wetter.

Three airlines fly nonstop from London. British Airways and Virgin Atlantic fly from Heathrow, and Norse Atlantic flies from Gatwick until 15 April 2027. Norse often has lower base fares, but checked baggage and meals usually cost extra. Compare like with like. Read the London to Cape Town direct flights guide for the schedule detail.

What does the land part cost?

Herons House tailor-made journeys start from USD 1,998 per person for six nights in Cape Town. International flights are quoted separately.

Five choices raise or lower the land cost:

  1. Season. December and early January carry peak rates and minimum stays at many hotels.
  2. Hotel standard and location. A sea-view room in Camps Bay or the V&A Waterfront costs more than a city-bowl guesthouse.
  3. Safari type. A SANParks rest camp in Kruger costs far less than a private lodge in Sabi Sand, where the rate usually includes meals, two game drives a day and levies.
  4. Private guiding. A private driver-guide for each day out is comfortable but adds up over a week.
  5. Number of moves. Each new base adds transfer time and cost. Fewer, longer stays are usually better value.

Verified 2026–27 costs you can plan with

Some costs are fixed and published. These are the current official rates:

Item Price Source
Kruger National Park conservation fee, international adult R692 per day from 1 November 2026 SANParks
Kruger National Park conservation fee, international child R345 per day from 1 November 2026 SANParks
Table Mountain Cableway, adult return R475 online, R530 at the ticket office Table Mountain Cableway, 2026–27
Table Mountain Cableway, child return (4–17) R230 online, R270 at the ticket office Table Mountain Cableway, 2026–27
Table Mountain Cableway, under 4 Free Table Mountain Cableway

The Kruger fee applies per person, per day you are in the park. For a family of four with two children spending three days in Kruger, the conservation fee alone is (2 × R692 + 2 × R345) × 3 = R6,222. Private lodges in the Greater Kruger reserves charge their own levies, which are usually included in the lodge rate.

Cableway tickets bought online are valid for seven days, which helps when wind closes the cableway. Check the Table Mountain Cableway website on the morning you plan to go.

How does the pound–rand rate affect the cost?

Many South African suppliers price in rand, so the exchange rate changes what you pay in pounds.

According to ValutaFX data, the pound traded between about R21.5 and R22.8 from January to July 2026, averaging about R22. On a R50,000 land cost, a one-rand move in the exchange rate changes the sterling price by roughly £100.

What this means in practice:

  • Check the live rate before paying a deposit or balance.
  • Ask whether your quote is fixed in pounds or dollars, or will be recalculated from rand.
  • A card with no foreign transaction fees saves money on meals, wine and shopping.

Where can you save money?

You can lower the cost without changing the character of the trip:

  • Travel in late January to March, or in shoulder months. You avoid the most expensive flight and hotel window.
  • Choose a malaria-free safari. The Eastern Cape and Madikwe are alternatives to Kruger. See the malaria-free safaris guide.
  • Stay longer in fewer places. Each extra base adds a transfer and a check-in day.
  • Self-drive in the Cape and Garden Route. Roads are good and distances are manageable, though a driver is easier for Winelands days.
  • Book the Cableway online. It is R55 cheaper per adult than the ticket office.

Where is it worth spending more?

  • Flight dates in peak season. Booking early for December matters more than finding the cheapest fare.
  • A private safari lodge if wildlife is the priority. Private reserves allow off-road driving and fewer vehicles at a sighting.
  • Location in Cape Town. A well-placed hotel saves taxi time and gives you better evenings.
  • Travel insurance. Choose cover that includes medical evacuation from safari areas.

Does a UK traveller need a visa?

No. British citizens can visit South Africa without a visa for up to 90 days for tourism or business. The UK Foreign Office says your passport must be valid for at least 30 days after you leave South Africa and must have two blank pages. From 1 July 2026, all travellers must complete South Africa’s online traveller declaration.

ATOL and booking protection

If you buy a package that includes a flight from a UK travel business, ask whether it is ATOL protected. If you book flights separately from land arrangements, check what your card provider and travel insurance cover if a supplier fails.

Questions travellers ask

How much does a South Africa holiday from the UK cost?

There is no honest single figure without dates and choices. Treat it as two budgets: the return flight from London, and the land arrangements. Herons House land arrangements start from USD 1,998 per person for six nights in Cape Town. Adding a private safari lodge is usually the biggest increase.

When is the cheapest time to visit South Africa from the UK?

Flights and hotels are usually better value from May to August, the South African winter, when Cape Town is cooler and wetter. Mid-December to early January is the most expensive window because UK and South African holidays overlap.

Is South Africa expensive for British travellers?

Day-to-day costs such as restaurants, wine and guided tours are often good value against UK prices. Peak-season flights and private safari lodges are the expensive parts. The pound–rand rate affects every rand-priced cost.

How much is the Kruger National Park entry fee?

From 1 November 2026, SANParks charges international visitors a daily conservation fee of R692 per adult and R345 per child. Private lodges in the Greater Kruger reserves usually include their own conservation levies in the rate, so check what your quote includes.

Should I pay for South Africa in pounds or rand?

Ask for both. Many local suppliers price in rand, while a pound or dollar quote helps you plan. Check which currency you will be charged in and whether the final amount can change before you pay.
