Who flies nonstop from London to Cape Town?

Three airlines fly nonstop between London and Cape Town in the 2026–27 southern summer. Two fly from Heathrow and one from Gatwick.

Airline London airport Season Peak frequency Aircraft
British Airways Heathrow Year-round 21 flights a week from 13 December 2026 (up from 17) Check at booking
Virgin Atlantic Heathrow Seasonal, resumed 15 October 2026 Up to 11 flights a week from 11 December 2026 Boeing 787-9
Norse Atlantic Gatwick 10 September 2026 to 15 April 2027 Check the live schedule Boeing 787

British Airways is the only nonstop carrier that operates throughout the year. If you are travelling in the UK summer, the choice usually narrows to British Airways or a one-stop connection.

Frequencies change by season and sometimes by week, so treat this table as a route guide rather than a timetable. Check the airline’s own schedule for your date before paying.

British Airways from Heathrow

British Airways announced in March 2026 that it would increase Heathrow–Cape Town from 17 to 21 weekly flights from 13 December 2026. That is three flights a day at the height of the season.

More flights make the busiest weeks easier to book, but they do not make them cheap. Christmas and New Year fares remain high because demand from the UK and from South Africa peaks at the same time.

Virgin Atlantic from Heathrow

Virgin Atlantic’s seasonal Cape Town service restarted on 15 October 2026 and builds to up to 11 weekly flights from 11 December. The additional flight, VS414, leaves Heathrow on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays. The return, VS415, leaves Cape Town on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays from 12 December. The route uses Boeing 787-9 aircraft.

Norse Atlantic from Gatwick

Norse Atlantic flies Gatwick–Cape Town between 10 September 2026 and 15 April 2027 on Boeing 787 aircraft. The flight takes about 11.5 hours.

Norse is a low-cost long-haul airline. Its lower fares usually cover the seat only, so add checked baggage, seat selection and meals before comparing it with British Airways or Virgin Atlantic. For a family of four with luggage, the difference can narrow considerably.

Gatwick is also a practical choice for travellers in Sussex, Surrey, Kent and south London.

How long is the flight?

Plan on about 11 to 12 hours southbound. The flight crosses few time zones:

  • UK winter (late October to late March): Cape Town is two hours ahead of London.
  • UK summer (late March to late October): Cape Town is one hour ahead.

Because the time change is small, most travellers adjust quickly. Overnight departures arrive in Cape Town in the morning, which makes a short first day with a late afternoon walk a sensible plan.

Nonstop or one stop?

A nonstop flight saves time, but a one-stop route can still make sense.

Choose nonstop when Consider one stop when
You want the shortest journey and one set of security checks You want a lower fare and can accept a longer journey
You are travelling with young children You live closer to Manchester, Birmingham, Edinburgh or Glasgow
Your trip is short and every day matters You want to break the journey in Dubai, Doha or Istanbul
You are travelling in peak season and want fewer misconnection risks Your preferred dates have no nonstop seats left

No nonstop service from a regional UK airport had been announced for 2026–27 when this guide was checked. From outside London, compare a domestic connection into Heathrow with a single connection through a Gulf, European or Istanbul hub.

When should you book?

For 15 December to 5 January, book as early as possible. This is when UK school holidays and South Africa’s own summer holidays overlap. South African public schools close on 9 December 2026 and reopen on 13 January 2027, so domestic demand is also at its highest.

For late January to March, there is more flexibility. Cape Town is still in high summer, with long days and dry weather, but the holiday rush has passed.

For April to September, check the airline first. Only British Airways flies nonstop all year. Virgin Atlantic and Norse Atlantic operate seasonally.

What do UK travellers need to enter South Africa?

The UK Foreign Office entry guidance sets out the main rules for British passport holders:

Requirement What it means
Visa Not needed for tourism or business stays of up to 90 days
Passport validity At least 30 days after the date you leave South Africa
Blank pages At least two blank pages for entry and exit stamps
Children Additional rules apply to under-18s; check the Department of Home Affairs guidance
Yellow fever A certificate is needed only if you are arriving from, or have transited, a yellow-fever risk country
Traveller declaration From 1 July 2026, all travellers entering or leaving South Africa must complete the online SARS traveller declaration

Cash above R25,000 per person, or above USD 10,000 or its equivalent in other currencies, must be declared.

The two-blank-pages rule is the one most likely to stop a passenger at check-in. Look at your passport now rather than the night before you fly.

What happens after landing?

Cape Town International Airport is about 20 kilometres from the city centre. The drive usually takes 20 to 30 minutes outside rush hour, but allow longer in peak December traffic.

Herons House arranges private airport transfers as part of each itinerary. Read the Cape Town airport transfer guide for what to expect.

How Herons House can help

Herons House arranges the land journey around the flight you choose: transfers, Cape Town stays, Winelands and Garden Route extensions, and safari connections.

Tailor-made South Africa journeys start from USD 1,998 per person for six nights in Cape Town. International flights are quoted separately.
