Why Garden Route

The Garden Route is a journey rather than one attraction. Give it enough nights, select two or three bases, and let weather and personal interests decide whether the day leans toward forest, lagoon, coast or a slower town experience.

Best for: Road trips, families, coast and soft adventure

What defines the stay

Build around what matters.

01

Wilderness

A restful base for lakes, beach, forest walks and canoeing, with George Airport nearby.

02

Knysna and Plettenberg Bay

Knysna centres lagoon life and dining; Plettenberg Bay offers beaches, Robberg and access toward the eastern route.

03

Tsitsikamma

Forest and a dramatic coast reward an early start or an overnight near Storms River rather than a rushed final stop.

Where to base yourself

Choose the right rhythm.

Wilderness

Best for nature, a slower first base and easy access from George.

Knysna

A central option for lagoon views, restaurants and travellers who prefer a larger town base.

Plettenberg Bay

Best for beaches, Robberg and reaching the eastern Garden Route without a very long day.

Planning notes

Make the journey work.

Avoid nightly hotel changes

Two or three well-chosen bases create better days than sleeping in every town on the map.

Choose the right airport

George suits the central route; Gqeberha can support a one-way journey reaching Tsitsikamma.

Respect road and weather conditions

Flooding, rockfalls and closures can affect the N2 and local roads. Recheck conditions after severe weather.

Best time to visit

Choose the season that fits you.

December to February

Summer is warm and popular for beaches, lagoons and family holidays. Reserve accommodation and activities early, allow for holiday traffic, and expect coastal weather to vary between towns.

March to May

Autumn often offers pleasant road-trip conditions and less pressure on popular bases. Sea and air temperatures begin to cool, while forest walks and food-focused days remain strong.

June to August

Winter brings cooler days, rain fronts and quieter towns. It can suit hiking, fireside stays and value-conscious travel, but water activities and exposed coastal walks need weather alternatives.

September to November

Spring is green and changeable, with wildflowers and increasing outdoor options. It is a useful shoulder season before the December peak, although layers and flexible timing remain essential.

Suggested stay

A realistic Garden Route itinerary.

Days 1-2: Cape Town to Wilderness

Break the long eastbound drive with a purposeful lunch or overnight if needed. Use Wilderness for beach, lakes, forest and recovery rather than arriving late and leaving immediately.

Days 3-4: Knysna and its surroundings

Base near the lagoon or town and choose among viewpoints, forest, food and a day toward Sedgefield or Plettenberg Bay. Avoid assuming every activity requires a separate hotel.

Days 5-6: Plettenberg Bay and Robberg

Move east for beaches, Robberg Nature Reserve and nearby wildlife or food experiences. Select a trail that matches conditions and fitness, carry water and avoid exposed hiking in unsuitable weather.

Day 7: Tsitsikamma and departure

Give Storms River and the Tsitsikamma coast enough daylight, ideally with a nearby overnight. Continue to Gqeberha for a one-way flight or retrace the route only when the wider itinerary requires it.

Travel with confidence

Everything in place for an effortless Garden Route stay.

Driving distances

Cape Town to Wilderness is a substantial driving day, and short map distances can still conceal scenic stops or road delays. Limit daily ambitions, refuel before remote stretches and avoid unnecessary night driving.

Car hire and one-way routes

A hire car gives the greatest freedom. Compare one-way fees and flight schedules for George and Gqeberha; returning to Cape Town can make sense for airfare, but it adds considerable driving.

Safety outdoors

Check trail, fire, surf and weather conditions locally. Do not leave luggage visible in a parked car, use established parking areas and follow reserve staff guidance for hiking and water activities.

Booking strategy

Reserve festive-season stays, family rooms, popular Plettenberg Bay properties and specialist activities early. In quieter months, preserve flexibility for rain while confirming any activity with limited operating days.

Before you decide

Questions travellers ask.

How many days does the Garden Route need?

Five nights is a useful minimum from Cape Town. Seven nights allows a slower three-base journey and more resilience to weather.

Should you drive the Garden Route in both directions?

Not necessarily. A one-way route using George or Gqeberha can reduce backtracking when flights and car-hire terms work.

Is Knysna or Plettenberg Bay the better base?

Choose Knysna for lagoon atmosphere and central dining; choose Plettenberg Bay for beaches, Robberg and easier access to Tsitsikamma.
