Cape Town Family Holiday From Kenya: School Holidays, Documents and Cost

The best window for a Cape Town family holiday from Kenya is the long school holiday, which runs from 26 October 2026 to 1 January 2027. Cape Town's summer lines up with Kenya's long holiday. Families with children sitting KCSE should wait until the exams end on 20 November. Every child needs their own passport, and everyone over one year old needs a yellow fever certificate because Kenya is on South Africa's risk list. Herons House family trips start from USD 1,998 per person for six nights in Cape Town, with flights quoted separately.

When are Kenya’s school holidays?

The Ministry of Education’s 2026 school calendar sets these dates:

Period Dates
Term 1 5 January – 2 April 2026
April holiday 7 – 24 April 2026
Term 2 27 April – 31 July 2026
August holiday 3 – 21 August 2026
Term 3 24 August – 23 October 2026
Long holiday 26 October 2026 – 1 January 2027
2027 school year starts 4 January 2027

The Ministry of Education confirmed in August 2026 that the 2027 school year will start on 4 January. The full 2027 term dates had not been published when this guide was checked.

Which school holiday suits Cape Town best?

Holiday Cape Town season What to expect
April Autumn Mild, settled weather and fewer crowds. Good value.
August Winter Cool and wet, with green landscapes. Whale season begins on the coast.
Long holiday (late October – early January) Late spring and summer Warm, dry and sunny. Busiest from mid-December.

The long holiday is the most popular choice. Cape Town is at its warmest, and the days are long.

Planning around national exams

Families with children sitting national exams should plan travel after they finish:

Exam 2026 dates
KPSEA 26 – 30 October
KJSEA 26 October – 5 November
KCSE 2 – 20 November

For families with a KCSE candidate, the most practical window is after 20 November. Late November and the first week of December are often the best balance of good weather, availability and value. South African schools close on 9 December 2026, and Cape Town becomes much busier after that.

Travel documents for children

Every child needs their own valid passport. Kenyan citizens can currently visit South Africa visa-free for short tourist stays. Read the South Africa visa guide for Kenyans for the full rules.

South Africa has specific requirements for children travelling across its borders. Check the Department of Home Affairs guidance on travel requirements for children before you book.

As a sensible precaution, carry:

  • each child’s passport;
  • a copy of each child’s full birth certificate;
  • a signed consent letter from any parent who is not travelling, with a copy of their passport or ID;
  • any court order or death certificate that applies to your family.

These documents are most important when a child is travelling with only one parent, with a relative, or with someone who is not their parent.

Yellow fever certificates

South Africa’s Department of International Relations and Cooperation lists Kenya as a yellow fever risk country. This means:

  • Everyone over one year old travelling from Kenya needs a valid yellow fever certificate. This also applies after a transit of more than 12 hours in a risk country.
  • The vaccine must be given at least 10 days before departure.
  • The certificate is valid for life.
  • Travellers without a certificate can be refused entry or placed in quarantine for up to six days.

Check that every family member’s certificate is in their travel folder before you leave for the airport.

Flights from Nairobi

Kenya Airways is the only evidenced nonstop Nairobi–Cape Town service, and it operates on selected dates. On other dates, families usually connect through Johannesburg.

When flying with children:

  • Choose a connection of at least two hours in Johannesburg on a single ticket.
  • Book seats together at the time of booking.
  • Check baggage allowances for each passenger, including infants.

Read the Nairobi to Cape Town flights guide for more detail.

What a family holiday in Cape Town costs

Herons House family trips start from USD 1,998 per person for six nights in Cape Town. Flights from Nairobi are quoted separately.

The final cost depends on:

  • Dates. Late November and early December cost less than the weeks around Christmas and New Year.
  • Room type. A family suite or a self-catering apartment can be better value than two hotel rooms.
  • Children’s ages. Many attractions and hotels charge less for children.
  • Activities. A private driver for Peninsula and Winelands days adds comfort and cost.

Some fixed costs for 2026–27:

Item Adult Child
Table Mountain Cableway return, online R475 R230 (ages 4–17)
Table Mountain Cableway return, ticket office R530 R270 (ages 4–17)
Table Mountain Cableway, under 4 — Free

For a fuller breakdown, read the Cape Town trip cost from Kenya guide.

A six-night family plan

Day Plan
1 Arrive, transfer to the hotel, a short walk at the V&A Waterfront
2 Two Oceans Aquarium and the Waterfront
3 Table Mountain early, Kirstenbosch picnic in the afternoon
4 Cape Peninsula: Boulders Beach penguins, Cape Point and a beach stop
5 Flexible day for wind, a beach morning at Muizenberg or a farm visit
6 A relaxed Winelands day with family-friendly farms
7 Transfer to the airport

Keep the first and last days light. Children travel better when the plan has room to slow down. For a day-by-day version, read the 7-day Cape Town family itinerary or Cape Town with kids.

Adding a safari

Some families add a short safari. Kruger is a malaria area, with the highest risk from November to April, so many families with young children prefer a malaria-free reserve. Read the first family safari in South Africa guide and the malaria-free safaris guide.

Before you travel

  • Every child has a valid passport.
  • Yellow fever certificates for everyone over one year old, vaccinated at least 10 days before departure.
  • Birth certificates and consent letters, where relevant.
  • South Africa’s online traveller declaration, required for all travellers from 1 July 2026.
  • Travel insurance that covers each child.
  • Sunscreen, hats and light jackets for windy evenings.
