South Africa Entry Requirements for Chinese Citizens: ETA and Visa Rules
Mainland Chinese ordinary passport holders require advance authorisation before travelling to South Africa. Eligible adults can currently use South Africa's ETA for qualifying short visits through supported airports. Hong Kong and Macao SAR passports are treated separately, and minors still require an available alternative process while ETA applications for children remain unavailable.

Entry rules depend on the passport
Holders of ordinary mainland Chinese passports are not generally visa-exempt for South African tourism. They need advance authorisation before boarding.
As checked on 15 October 2026, eligible adults from China can use South Africa’s live Electronic Travel Authorisation system for qualifying short visits through supported airports. ETA is a route to the required authorisation; it does not make mainland Chinese ordinary passports visa-exempt.
Use only the official South African ETA portal and current Home Affairs FAQ. Avoid commercial websites that imitate government branding or promise guaranteed approval.
Mainland China, Hong Kong and Macao are different
Apply the rule to the passport presented at the border, not to a broad description of Chinese nationality.
| Passport | Position checked 15 October 2026 |
|---|---|
| Mainland China ordinary passport | Advance authorisation required; eligible adults can use ETA for qualifying visits |
| Hong Kong SAR passport | Listed separately with a short-visit exemption, currently 30 days |
| Macao SAR passport | Listed separately with a short-visit exemption, currently 30 days |
| Mainland diplomatic, official or service passport | Treated separately under the official exemption schedule |
Check the live Home Affairs visa-exemption schedule, because passport categories and periods can change.
How South Africa’s ETA works
The digital process can request:
- passport and personal details;
- intended travel dates and purpose;
- accommodation and journey information;
- live facial or identity verification;
- payment where applicable;
- supporting information requested by the system.
The official FAQ says many outcomes are produced quickly, often within 24 hours. This is not a service guarantee and should not justify a last-minute application or non-refundable booking before approval.
ETA validity and the period admitted at the border are not the same thing. An immigration officer determines the permitted stay after arrival.
Supported airports
The current implementation lists:
- OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg;
- Cape Town International Airport;
- Lanseria International Airport;
- King Shaka International Airport in Durban.
Do not assume the same authorisation supports a land, sea or unsupported airport arrival. This matters for itineraries combining South Africa with Victoria Falls, Botswana, Eswatini, Lesotho or another regional border crossing.
If the traveller plans to leave and re-enter South Africa, verify that the authorisation, validity and number of entries cover the complete route.
Children cannot yet rely on ETA
The official FAQ states that minors require authorisation but ETA applications for minors will be introduced in a future phase. Therefore:
- do not obtain adult ETA approvals and assume the family can travel;
- identify the available child application route before paying for flights;
- follow the selected process for birth, consent and custody documents;
- ensure every child’s passport and approval match the itinerary;
- confirm airline boarding checks before departure.
Requirements can differ when a child travels with both parents, one parent, another adult or alone. Use official instructions for the exact family situation rather than a generic template.
When to use VFS or another route
The official VFS South Africa service for China remains relevant when:
- the traveller is a minor;
- ETA does not support the intended port;
- the passport or purpose does not fit the live system;
- work, study, medical treatment or another category applies;
- an official source directs the traveller to an alternative application channel.
Approved tour operators may use the Trusted Tour Operator Scheme for qualifying groups. TTOS is not a self-service shortcut for independent travellers.
Do not submit duplicate applications across ETA, VFS, eVisa or tour channels without official instruction. Conflicting applications can complicate rather than accelerate the journey.
Passport and border documents
Carry the application and arrival evidence in hand luggage:
| Document | Planning action |
|---|---|
| Passport | Use the same passport submitted in the application and meet the channel’s validity rule |
| ETA or visa approval | Keep an offline and printed copy even where the system is digital |
| Return or onward ticket | Show the complete route and planned departure |
| Accommodation | Carry confirmed addresses and contacts |
| Funds | Keep accessible evidence if requested |
| Health certificate | Check yellow-fever requirements created by origin and transit |
| Child documents | Carry the situation-specific authorisation, consent and parentage evidence |
| Regional visas | Check every neighboring country separately |
The ETA FAQ currently describes a passport-validity standard specific to its process. Traditional visa and ordinary border guidance may use different wording. Follow the strictest applicable requirement shown by the official channel and airline for the actual journey.
Arrival and admission
Approval permits travel to the port; it does not guarantee entry. An immigration officer can assess:
- whether the passport and approval match;
- whether the purpose remains the same as the application;
- accommodation and onward travel;
- funds and health documents;
- previous immigration compliance;
- any concern arising at the border.
Check the admitted period before leaving immigration. Do not assume the maximum possible stay was granted.
Payments and practical planning
Once authorisation is secure, prepare for the differences between familiar Chinese payment ecosystems and South Africa. Read whether Alipay or WeChat Pay can be used in South Africa and carry internationally enabled physical cards plus a modest rand contingency.
For accommodation, compare where Chinese tourists should stay in Cape Town. A seven-day Cape Town itinerary for Chinese tourists creates enough room for the city, Peninsula, penguins, Winelands and shopping.
The flights from China to Cape Town guide should be used with the final authorisation route: a connection in another country may introduce transit, health or baggage requirements even when the South African approval is correct.
Claims to avoid
Do not say:
- all Chinese passports need the same visa;
- ETA makes mainland passports visa-free;
- children can use ETA before the official phase launches;
- ETA works at every border;
- approval guarantees entry;
- an outcome will always arrive within 24 hours;
- a tour operator can bypass immigration rules.
The precise, useful statement is that mainland ordinary passport holders need advance authorisation, qualifying adults can currently use ETA through supported airports, and every child and alternative port must have its own confirmed route.
Update discipline
Passport treatment, ETA airports, minor eligibility and alternative application channels were checked on 15 October 2026. Recheck immediately before application and departure because digital rollout phases can change without a conventional annual visa update.
Questions travellers ask
Do mainland Chinese tourists need a visa for South Africa?
Ordinary mainland Chinese passports are not generally visa-exempt, so advance authorisation is required. Eligible adults can currently use the official ETA system for qualifying short visits through supported airports.
Can Chinese citizens apply for South Africa's ETA?
Yes, eligible adults from China are included in the live system. Apply only through the official government portal and verify the passport, purpose and arrival airport before relying on it.
Can children apply for ETA?
The current official FAQ says ETA applications for minors will be introduced in a future phase. Families must confirm an available alternative authorisation process for every child.
Can an ETA holder enter through a South African land border?
Do not assume so. The current rollout supports OR Tambo, Cape Town, Lanseria and King Shaka international airports. Use official advice for another port of entry.
Does ETA approval guarantee entry?
No. An immigration officer makes the final decision and can request accommodation, onward travel, funds, health documents and evidence matching the stated purpose.
Plan after authorisation is clear
